Colorado Lion Hunting Memories for a Father & Son - By Marc S.

I wanted to take a minute and send you a quick note on what was truly a memorable hunt for my son and I with Wayne Pennell of Cathedral Bluff Outfitters. I have had the good fortune of being able to hunt on the road quite extensively.  Throughout my travels I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly with respect to outfitters and guides.  Shortly after booking the hunt,

Wayne contacted me and spent a good deal of time with me on the phone prepping me on what to expect as well as what gear to bring.  Upon flying into Grand Junction my son and I were met by Wayne’s wife, Chantae.  She drove us to Rangely, helped with the procurement of our licenses and any last minute items we needed, and transported us to the lodge.  Wayne had been out that day with his crew scouting for fresh tom tracks so that we could start hunting the next morning!  We were treated to a huge dinner of crab legs and steak and hit the sack as we had to be up at 3AM to begin our hunt.  The next morning came early with Wayne picking us up in his truck and we headed to the mountains.  Wayne had found a really good tom track the day before but as luck would have it we found an even bigger one that morning.  As soon as clock struck legal hunting time Wayne let loose the best dogs I have ever hunted with.  They took off like laser guided missiles and Wayne guided us throughout the day to the giant tom several times (treed and on a steep rock ledge).  The dogs finally anchored this tireless cat at 4PM toward the bottom of a steep mountain which we carefully traversed.

I think the photos tell the rest of the story best.

Wayne, your operation is top notch.  The food, equipment, lodging, dogs and your tenacity were all such a pleasant surprise.  Additionally you, your wife, and team were the nicest people I have ever come across in all of my hunting travels.  My son and I have a memory that will last a lifetime.

P.S.  Just to provide some perspective with regards to the picture.  I’m 6’4”.  The tom that I came home with was aged at 7 years old and was an absolute bruiser.  In addition to being rewarded with a first day tom, he was also magnificent!
